    Answer: Not only are they plastic, they are made of 'Material: bisphenol- A' (according to the listing) - aka: BPA (one of the many chemicals we have known to avoid for decades).... These are not truly food safe.

    Answer: Approximately 6/7 inches. I gave them away to my sister for her to start taking salads to work. She has enjoyed putting together salads and has said that they hold a good size salad. We both agree that hand washing them is best due to our dishwashers getting quite hot. And we put the wetter ingredients at the bottom with drier ingredients then lettuce. Works great because when you dump in to a bowl the toppings end up on top and the lettuce is still crisp.
