Answer: The metal ends are 2.5-2.75 inches each. -

Answer: Needle length is 2.5 inches including the .5-inch bend. -

Would 12-inch circulars work for an adult hat?
Answer: Sure but you’d still need double points or magic loop for the very top of the hat. Stitches would be crowded but certainly workable. Not sure though, if you’re just purchasing one needle for this get a 16 inch. -
Question:
Should I use 9-inch or 12-inch circular needles for making socks if I'm a tight knitter?
Answer: I use 9 inches for socks and 12 inches for sleeves. Depending on the number of stitches you use for socks, I'm usually using 56 or 64 stitches, the 12 inches are too long for the stitches to go around for me.
