- Through my reflections and memories in writing this memoir, it became a labor of love created for my family and for those families caring for their loved ones with Alzheimer's, giving them hope. Dad was an exceptional man in every season of his life. He filmed our Christmas morning chaos, capturing the colorful packages ripped open and the wrapping paper thrown everywhere. He planned our annual family adventures, exploring our country and creating vibrant family memories. For forty-five years, he sailed on summer weekends, on cloudy days, balmy days, and windy days. His Alzheimer’s reduced him from our brilliant and beloved Dad into a man who no longer knew us. We suffered during his decline, but we cared for him with all the love we learned from him.Theirs is a tale of love, loss, and legacy. I am their daughter, one of the eleven children they raised in a Chicago suburb during the decades spanning the later years of the 20th Century into the early years of the 21st Century. I write of the family times together, watching the slow decline of our father until his death from Alzheimer’s, and the last years of our mother's life without him.
