- Kalervo's son, Kullervo, is perhaps the darkest and most tragic of the dozens of characters Tolkien created. Because, in Tolkien's words, Kullervo the Magnificent is an unfortunate orphan with supernatural powers and a sad fate. Raised next to the dark wizard Untamo, who killed his father, kidnapped his mother, and tried to kill him three times as a young child, Kullervo has nothing but his love for his twin sister Wanona and Musti, the magical black dog who watches over him. Sworn to revenge on the wizard after being sold as a slave, Kullervo learns that there can be no escape from the cruelest disaster even in the moment of revenge. Kullervo's Story is the fundamental step towards creativity from adaptation on Tolkien's path, resulting in the Silmarillion. Tolkien pointed out that this text was the ancestor of Turin Turambar, the protagonist of the Children of Hurin, by saying that Kullervo's Story was my starting point in my attempt to write my own legends, and that it was the basis of ancient legends. In addition to being an impressive story, drafts, notes, articles published for the first time and additional texts written by Tolkien about the Kalevala epic, which is one of the starting points of the worlds he created, also find a place in this book.
