- OOSTENRIJK en HONGARIJEIn 1898 werd door een afscheidingsbeweging (Secession) van kunstenaars het Weense Secessionsgebouw in gebruik genomen als tentoonstellingsgebouw. Met zijn markante koepels is is met zijn markante koepels een direct in het oog springende verschijning. Het gebouw wordt tegenwoordig gezien als één van de meest prominente voorbeelden van de Europese architectuur in de overgangsfase naar het Modernisme van de twintigste eeuw.Boedapest is met zijn overblijfselen van de Romeinse stad Aquincum en het Gotische kasteel van Boeda, die een over een lange periode in de geschiedenis een aanzienlijke architectonische invloed hadden, één van 's werelds meest vooraanstaande stedelijke landschappen.Schönbrunn was meer dan een eeuw de residentie van de Habsburgse keizelijke familie. Het werd ontworpen door de architecten Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach en Nicolaus Pacassi. Tot in het midden van de twintigste eeuw vormde deze bodemrijkdom een basis voor welvaart, iets wat zich bijvoorbeeld manifesteerd in de rijke achitectuur van Hallstatt.De spoorbaan van Semmering, gebouwd tussen 1848 and 1854, is 41 kilometer lang en loopt over hoge bergen. Het is een hoogstandje van de civiele bouwkunst in de spoorbouw van die periode. De kwaliteit van de tunnels, viaducten en andere werken, hebben het mogelijk gemaakt dat de lijn tot op de dag van vandaag continu in gebruik is gebleven.Graz is een bijzonder geslaagd voorbeeld van een levend centraal Europees stedelijk complex dat vele eeuwen onder Habsburgs gezag stond. De oude stad is een harmonieus mengsel van architectonische stijlen en artistieke stromingen die elkaar gedurende de middeleeuwen opvolgden.Wenen ontwikkelde zich van een vroege Keltisch en Romeinse nederzetting tot een middeleeuwse en tenslotte Barokke stad. De hoofdstad van het Oostenrijks- Hongaarse rijk. Het speelde een leidende rol in de Europese klassieke muziek, van de grote eeuw van het Weense Classicisme, tot in het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Het historische centrum van Wenen is rijk aan architectonische ensembles, waaronder Barokke kastelen en tuinen, alsook de laat negentiende eeuwse Ringstrasse vol met zijn indrukwekkende gebouwen monumenten en parken.Het Neusiedlermeer gebied is gedurende millenia een ontmoetingsplaats tussen verschillende culturen geweest. Dit wordt o.a. zichtbaar door de wijze waarop het platteland vorm gegeven is, een evolutionaire symbiose tussen menselijke activiteit en de fysieke omgeving.De opmerkelijk plattelands architectuur van de dorpen, het meer, en de verschillende 18e eeuwse paleizen dragen bij aan de bijzondere culturele waarde van het gebied.
